Drawing a picture of any part of London is not just an act of looking, nor is it simply an act of putting pen to paper. Drawing is also an archeological act. The pen becomes a spade cutting through the city’s layered landscapes, histories and stories. The paper plane becomes an archeological site within which these pasts, presents and futures can be reconstructed. In Southwark this means excavating the glossy sheen of curtain walling, the brute gestures of Victorian infrastructure and the libidinous fringe of mediaeval entertainment. This drawing is a picture of time as well as space, constructed from relics found in the sites own image hoard.
Drawn for the 2014 10x10/Drawing London auction in aid of Article 25.
